Lew Gibbons

Lew R. Gibbons, 90, of St. Thomas, PA, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born September 14, 1931 in Edenville, PA, he was the son of the late Bertha Ashwell.

A US Army veteran, Lew served honorably from 1949 – 1952 during the Korean War. He was the owner/operator of Gibbons Pulp Wood and Logging until his retirement in 2017. Lew enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles, reading Daily Bread, the Bible and the Shooter’s Bible. He also enjoyed playing cards, checkers, shooting pool, riding motorcycles in his younger years, and spending time with his family and friends. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Lew liked to feed birds, watch squirrels and rabbits, and loved spending time in the mountain and nature.

Lew was a hard worker, successful business man and was always willing to help others. He was a loving father who provided for his family in many ways. Lew was known as “The Ox”. He fought to the end.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary I. Gibbons, whom he married on November 23, 1957; four children, Teresa Hanson (Don) of St. Thomas, Kathy Gibbons (Gary Weaver) of Upper Strasburg, Sherry Shank of Chambersburg, and Tonya Seville (Steve Wingert) of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. In addition to his mother, Lew was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 7, 2021 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Casey Hurst will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens where military honors will be provided by the VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Antrim Brethren In Christ Church, 24 Kauffman Road E., Chambersburg, PA 17202.
