Lillian S. Shively, age 107, died at Menno Haven, Scotland Avenue on Saturday, January 13, 2018. Born on December 16, 1910, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Issac Benjamin Shockey and Nannie Oglesbee Shockey. She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Shively, and her brother, Dr. Donavan Isaac Benjamin Shockey, of Waynesboro, PA.
Lillian graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1929 and from Westchester State College (now Westchester State University) in 1933. After graduating from college she served as the music supervisor in the Washington Township schools. She married John S. Shively in 1937 and moved to Chambersburg.
Lillian was an active volunteer in the Chambersburg community. Among her numerous activities was her service as executive vice president of the Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council and as a hostess at the 37th National Girl Scout Convention held in Detroit, Michigan. She was a long time member of the Franklin County Branch of the American Association of University Women. Lillian was instrumental in the creation and development of the Cumberland Valley School of Music and was an active member of the Chambersburg Community Concert organization. In 2004 she was honored for her many years of service as a music educator and promoter of concerts and the arts.
The First United Methodist Church benefited from Lillian’s many years of membership and involvement. She presided over the Board of Trustees at one time and volunteered to help in many activities of the church.
Lillian served as president of the Chambersburg Hospital Senior Auxiliary and in 1968 was president of the central region of the Pennsylvania Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. She served as a director of the Chambersburg Community Chest, the Franklin County Child Care Advisory Board, the Salvation Army Board and the Practical Nurses Association. In addition, she served as program chairperson of the Chambersburg Chapter of the American Field Service. Lillian was also a member of the Garden Club, the Chambersburg Afternoon Club and the Martha Custis Chapter of the Eastern Star.
Lillian is survived by her daughters, Karen S. Leete, of Silver Spring, MD and Susan Shively, M.D. of Philadelphia, PA, three grandchildren, Jennifer S. Leete of Washington, D.C., Amy Leete Leone of Great Falls, VA, and Bruce A. Leete of Atlanta, GA, and six great- grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Menno Haven, Inc. 2011 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201, designated for the Benevolent Fund. A memorial service is planned for February 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Menno Haven. Burial in Norland Cemetery will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Chambersburg.
