Lois Sollenberger

September 25, 1919 — May 16, 2013

Lois E. Sollenberger passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Menno Haven, Chambersburg, PA. She was born on September 25, 1919, the third child of Willis M. and Ivy Hartman Rice. Her childhood home was in Zullinger, PA, and she graduated from Washington Township High School in 1938. She married Norman W. Sollenberger on January 25, 1941. They worked as a team on Norlo Farm, now Norlo Park; at New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church, in many different capacities; in numerous dairy organizations; and in parenting their five children.
Lois is survived by five children and fifteen grandchildren: Allen and Carolyn Sollenberger, Kurt, Lorie, and Julie; Anne and Ray Rife, Kevin and Kent; Joyce and Glen Raser, Jonathan, David, and Katrina; Lane and Judy Sollenberger, Brian, Brent, and Kayla; Lynn and Andrea Sollenberger, Mark, David, Benjamin, and Laura; and one “borrowed” daughter, Lavonne Young. In addition, Lois has sixteen great-grandchildren and a collection of nieces and nephews. She spent many happy hours with her progeny playing games and watching them perform in academic, dramatic, and athletic settings.
Lois is also survived by the following siblings and siblings in-law: D. Paul and Gloria Rice, Dorothy Angle, Mary Rice, Fred and Dorothy Rice, Marilynn Rice, and Beulah and Wilmer Haas. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by the following siblings: Catherine Rice, Anna Myers, Hartman Rice, Thelma Plum, Burnell Rice, Gladys Esh, and Edna Rice.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at 2 PM in the New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church, 1575 Mont Alto Rd., Chambersburg, PA, with Rev. Lawton Jacobs officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 25, 2013, from 5-7 PM in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in Lois’s name to The Foundation for Enhancing Communities/The Norman and Lois Sollenberger Scholarship Fund, 200 N. Third St., Harrisburg, PA 17108-0678 or to Guilford Township for the continued enhancement of Norlo Park. Checks may be made payable to Guilford Township, 115 Spring Valley Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202.
