Lu Merriman

Lu M. Merriman, 94, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 28, 2017 at her home. Born April 21, 1923 in Brunswick, MD, she was a daughter of the late Irvin W. and Mamie V. Johnson Lloyd. She was a 1940 graduate of the Edinburg (VA) High School where she served as class President. During the 1950’s and 1960’s Lu was employed by several retail merchants in the downtown Chambersburg area and also as Box Office Manager at Totem Pole Playhouse during the 1960’s and 1970’s. She was last employed by the state of Pennsylvania, retiring from the Office of Employment Security. Lu will be remembered for a lifetime of service to others and her love of the color purple. She was a member and officer of the Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary, Women of the Moose Lodge #1128, the Chambersburg Evening Lions Club, and the Pennsylvania Association for Retired State Employees. Lu was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg where she participated in Sunday School and sang with the 3M Choir.

Lu had a love for theatre and was active with the Chambersburg Community Theatre both on stage and behind the scenes for many years. She performed with the Conococheague Players and served at Totem Pole Playhouse as a stockholder and board member; was an adamant supporter; and had perfect attendance for every production.

Lu is survived by three children, Phyllis F. White and husband William, Jr. of Chantilly, VA, David H. Flack, Jr. and wife Rosalie of Chambersburg, and Lee Merriman and wife Valerie of Chambersburg; ten grandchildren, Bob, Steve, Jenny, Angi, Vanessa, Glen, Dawn, Kathryn, Isaiah, and Jocelyn; fifteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Elois “Skip” Pearson; her brother; and her sister.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Ernest Charlesworth, the Chambersburg Hospital, Menno Haven, Christian Companions, and special friends for their care and support over the past several months.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 2, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Catherine Boileau and Rev. Guy Camp will officiate. Private interment, for the family, will be in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA, and immediately following the service on Friday at the church. Members of Women of the Moose Lodge will conduct a ritual at 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
