Mabel Baker

December 3, 1927 — March 8, 2017

Mabel P. Baker, 89, of Chambersburg, passed away on March 8, 2017 at Hershey Medical Center. Born December 3, 1927 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Richard Harrison Pollard and Ida V. (Hetrick) Pollard Stouffer.

Mabel was a 1944 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. She then attended Chambersburg Business School. Early in her life she was employed with the Ration Board, and Schaff Electric Company where she did accounting. She also worked at Letterkenny Army Depot, a local medical practice and did tax preparation for H&R Block, all while assisting her husband on their poultry farm. Mabel volunteered for 20 years with Meals on Wheels and preparing income taxes for the elderly.

She was a member of King Street Church in Chambersburg and in her younger years was very active in the Presbyterian Women’s Group. She enjoyed reading and doing needle point, especially counter stitchery. She was an accomplished cook and was well known for her apple cake. Mabel also enjoyed traveling and camping, visiting many national parks in the U.S. and Canada. She made numerous trips abroad and enjoyed Israel and New Zealand particularly. In her youth, Mabel spent time roller skating at Red Bridge Roller Rink. She was an avid gardener, growing a beautiful variety of flowers and vegetables and was especially fond of iris’s and daisies. She now works in the Lord’s garden.

Mabel is survived by her husband of 68 years, Eugene R. Baker; her son, James W. Baker and wife Cindy of Chambersburg; her sister-in-law Jane Pollard; and numerous nieces and nephews; and countless dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Richard “Johnny” Pollard and Virginia Pugh.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 13, 2017, in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Paul B. Baker and Rev. Ron Cook will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
