Mabel E. Clayton, 89, of Spring Run, PA, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, August 27, 2014 in the emergency room of Chambersburg Hospital. Born March 7, 1925 in Amberson, PA she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Margaret Palm Varner. A homemaker most of her life, Mabel was a member of Laurel Grove United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary in Dry Run and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She loved baseball and enjoyed jigsaw and cryptogram puzzles. She was dedicated to her daily scripture readings and devotions. Her husband, Samuel W. Clayton, preceded her in death on December 2, 1985.
She is survived by her son, Arthur G. Clayton and wife Judy of Amberson; her daughter, Kathy Jones of Chambersburg; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; and a sister, Dora Shetler. Aside from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death two sons, Oliver “Jerry” Clayton and Larry W. Clayton, Sr.; three brothers, George, Raymond, and Paul Varner; and two sisters, Marie Martin and Mildred Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Laurel Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. DeAnn Newhouse, Rev. James Fox, and Rev. Marlin A. “Butch” Neil officiating. Interment will follow at Amberson Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
