Marianna Mentzer

Marianna W. Mentzer, 95, formerly of 3208 Lincoln Way East, Fayetteville, PA, died at 12:05 PM Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Menno Haven. Born January 2, 1916 in Inverness, Mississippi, she was a daughter of the late Millard Walton and Mattie Lee Franklin Williams. She lived in Mississippi until 1942 and then moved to the Chambersburg/Fayetteville area. Mrs. Mentzer was a 1933 graduate of Inverness High School and attended the former Sunflower Junior College (now Mississippi Delta Community College) in Moorehead, MS in 1934 and 1935. She graduated in 1937 from the former Delta State College (now Delta State University), Cleveland, MS, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and majored in Math and Science. She did graduate work at the University of Alabama and degree work at the former Shippensburg State Teacher’s College. Mrs. Mentzer taught for four years at Summit (MS) High School and then for five months at Batesville (MS) High School. She was employed from 1942-1950 in the Payroll Department at Letterkenny Army Depot and trained at Rock Island, IL and Augusta, GA. Following her employment at Letterkenny she taught from 1959-1961 at James Buchanan High School, substituted in Chambersburg Area Schools from 1962-1968, and then retired in 1978 from the former Scotland School for Veteran’s Children.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Martha Custis Chapter #342 Order of Eastern Star, National AARP, and AARP Chapter 3261. Her beloved husband, Robert Harvey Mentzer, whom she married May 28, 1948, preceded her in death on January 15, 1969.

She is survived by her son, Dennis Lynn Mentzer and wife Michelle; grandson David A. Mentzer, his companion Tabitha Meyers, and their children Camden Meyers and Carter Mentzer, all of Lynchburg, VA; her niece, Margaret “Mickey” Sandridge of Senatobia, MS; and her sister-in-law, H. Lucille Mentzer of Reading. She is also survived by
Irene and Dorothy Stambaugh of Fayetteville; treasured friends Dick and Bonnie Kaufman; Janet Cook; Sue Glen; Linda Pound; and Lillian Kahl, all of Chambersburg; and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Millard Franklin Williams, and a sister, Mildred Lee Williams.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at Gettysburg National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 417 Phoenix Drive, Suite A or the American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Avenue, both in Chambersburg, PA 17201.
