Martha J. Hart, 83, a resident at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, died Thursday morning, January 1, 2015 in the nursing home. Born February 5, 1931 in Moundsville, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Burl and Bessie Richmond Allen. Mrs. Hart was employed at the former Glasgow Sewing Center and later owned and operated Hartcraft in Marion for a number of years. She was a member of the Heidelburg Church in Marion and the Chambersburg Quilt Guild. Mrs. Hart was a former Girl Scout leader and enjoyed quilting and sewing. She was an enthusiastic and tireless organizer of family beach vacations and holiday gatherings and was a skilled seamstress. Having her family together was her greatest source of joy. Her husband, John F. Hart, whom she married October 31, 1948, preceded her in death on December 30, 2012.
A much beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, she is survived by four children, Rebecca Pickett and husband Jonathan of Ephrata, PA, Mary Beth Castillo and husband Miguel of Steelton, PA, John A. Hart and wife Nancy of Marion, PA, and Paula Stuard and husband Craig of Manassas, VA; five grandchildren, Robert Allen Brookens, Alex Martin Hart, Tyler John Hart, Michael Mac Washinger, and Lindsay Hart Sumners; thirteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Daniel Allen and wife Sharon of Shippensburg, PA, and three nephews, Aaron, Levi, and Jacob. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda Hart.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Menno Haven Chapel. Private interment, prior to the service, will be at Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Marion, PA.
