Martha “Jane” Stermer, 91, of Chambersburg, passed away on Monday morning, February 1, 2016 at The Shook Home. Born February 14, 1924 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Frank E. Demuth and Sarah Leib Demuth. Her beloved husband, John Joseph Stermer, preceded her in death on January 14, 1986.
Jane was employed as a cook at Olympia Ice Cream Parlor for over 25 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg where she volunteered with the clothing bank and enjoyed working in the kitchen helping to prepare and serve luncheons. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and going on drives in the country and stopping for ice cream. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and sisters.
Jane is survived by three daughters, Diane Robertson of Shippensburg, Patricia Johnson (Bob) of Chambersburg, and Marsha Stermer (Sandy) of Salt Lake City, UT; three grandsons; two step-granddaughters; three great grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Gushert, Mildred Barnhart, and Helen Byers, all of Chambersburg; and a special friend, Judge Girlinghouse of Jensen Beach, FL. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Lester and Clarence Demuth.
A funeral service to honor Jane’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 4, 2016 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Donald Nolder will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday evening and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second St. Chambersburg, PA 17201 or to The Shook Home, 55 South Second St. Chambersburg, PA 17201. The family would like to thank all the staff at The Shook Home and Heartland Hospice for their exceptional care for Jane.
