Martin Senn

Martin “Marty” P. Senn, 91, a resident at Michaux Manor in Fayetteville and a former long-time resident of the Cascade, MD area, passed away July 24, 2015. Born November 30, 1923 in Youngstown, OH, he was a son of the late Martin J. and Mary Randolph Senn. He graduated in 1942 from South High School, Youngstown, OH, where he played center on the football team. Marty entered the University of Cincinnati on a full athletic football scholarship. His intention was to play ball and become a physical education teacher because of his love of the sport. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond E. Senn.

When WWII was escalating and the US draft was imminent, he chose to serve in the US Navy. He served as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class on the USS Trever, DMS-16, a destroyer minesweeper, earning the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon for outstanding heroism during WWII. During his 20 years of honorable service in the military he served in the US Navy, US Army, and the US Air Force. During his US Army assignment in Germany, he served in the European Command Intelligence Center at Camp King in Oberursel, Germany. Marty travelled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, North Africa, the South Pacific Islands, Australia, and New Zealand. After his retirement Marty decided to settle down near the Fort Ritchie, MD area because he wanted to continue being part of the military family. Marty said that the military provided him with everything, including travel, food, lodging, and medical services. During his retirement years, he loved visiting with friends at the Mountain Shadows Restaurant in Blue Ridge Summit, PA and at Hardees in Waynesboro, PA. He enjoyed calling bingo to the members of the Senior Center in Waynesboro, PA. We honor and salute Marty, one of America’s Greatest Generation.

Friends are invited to gather to celebrate Marty’s life at 1:30 PM Friday, March 4, 2016 at the Waynesboro Senior Activity Center. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Round trip transportation will be provided from the Senior Center to the cemetery for those in attendance.
