Marva Grafton Harris Spell, 87, of Bronx, NY and formerly of Hyde County, NC, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018. Born January 13, 1931, in Hyde County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Gladys Gibbs Harris. Her beloved husband, John Ivey Spell, preceded her in death on October 16, 1991.
Marva was a 1949 graduate of Hyde County Training High School in Sladesville, NC. She was employed in food service with the New York City Public School System until her retirement. She loved reading her bible, sharing the good news about Jehovah’s Kingdom with others, growing flowers and fruit trees, collecting pictures and collecting knick- knacks.
She is survived by four daughters, Shirley A. Anderson (Leroy) of Bronx, NY, Gwendolyn M. Howard (Gary Howard, Sr.) of South River, NJ, Vanessa J. Howard (Derek) of Cayambe, Equador, and Myra S. Harris (Sherod) of Jonesboro, GA; six grandchildren, Dawn Williams, Jason Anderson, Leah Taylor (Stephen), Gary Howard, Jr., Javin Trimble and Quentin Harris; three great grandchildren, Giavanni and Savannah Williams, and Nyla Anderson; two sisters-in-law, Lena Harris and Florine Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, Marva was preceded in death by five brothers, Henderson, Sherman, Jack, Samuel and Warren Harris; and three sisters, Myrtle Howard, Nancy Jones and Frances Gray.
Interment will be on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Harris Cemetery in Scranton, NC. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Washington, NC.
