Marvin G. Etter, age 88, of Chambersburg, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Village of Laurel Run. Born December 23, 1925 in Harrystown, PA, he was a son of the late Aden Oliver and Lelia M. Hopkins Etter.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Marvin served honorably during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked as a machinist at SKF in Shippensburg for 33 years until his retirement in 1981. A very generous and caring person, Marvin was also a faithful participant and member of King Street Church in Chambersburg. He was a founding member, Past Commandant, and served in the Honor Guard at the Landis-McLeaf Detachment Marine Corps League in Chambersburg, and was a member of the Detrich-Brechbill Post #612 in St. Thomas.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bernice Irene Barnhart Etter, whom he married on July 1, 1949; three children, Ronald G. Etter and wife Catherine of Blain, PA, Lelia M. Shoop and husband Jeffrey of Myersville, MD, and Detsie D. Harrison and husband Pete of Chambersburg; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Aside from his parents, he is preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Jacob Harrison will officiate. Interment will follow in Lincoln Cemetery where military graveside honors will be provided by the Landis-McLeaf Detachment Marine Corps League Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Inc. 1117 Country Club Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011 or to the Landis-McLeaf Detachement Marine Corps League, 450 Grant Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201, to be used towards their pre-game meals for CASHS sports teams.
