Mary Beard

Mary E. Beard, age 89, of Pond Bank, PA, died on Monday, January 23, 2012 in her home. Born on June 11, 1922 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Harry T. Corwell and Zelda V. Shatzley Corwell. She was the widow of George W. Beard, who preceded her in death on July 6, 2009.

A 1940 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Mary worked as a seamstress for the former Stanley Clothing Company, retiring in 1979. She was a charter member of the Open Door Church in Chambersburg, and a longtime member of the Jolly 60’s. She enjoyed word search books, reading, attending church and spending time with her family.

Surviving are two children, Linda L. Mentzer (and husband, John) of Chambersburg, and Thomas W. Beard, of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and three sisters, Janet V. Evans and Donna M. Mellott, both of Chambersburg, and Margaret Hoover of Camby, IN. Aside from her husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Monn, and a brother, Harry Corwell Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, January 27, 2012 in The Open Door Church, 600 Miller Street, Chambersburg, with Rev. Mike Sanders officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Thursday in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service in the church on Friday.
