Mary McVitty

Mary Culbertson McVitty, age 89, of Chambersburg, PA passed away at the Chambersburg Hospital on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Born December 8, 1924, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Dwight Samuel and Martha Stitt Culbertson McVitty.
A 1942 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, she graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers College (Shippensburg University) in 1946 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. In 1960, she earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the Pennsylvania State University. Ms. McVitty taught Elementary education for 33 years, retiring in 1979. On April 13, 1941, she became a member of the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Scotland, PA. She was a member of the National Education Association, retired and a life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National retired teachers association, National American Association of Retired persons, the Norland Chapter #3261 of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Golden Age Club of Chambersburg. Ms. McVitty enjoyed traveling, where she was able to have visited 48 of the 50 United States and most of Canada. She also enjoyed collection coins and stamps.
Surviving is one nephew, James L. Barnhart of Chambersburg and a great nephew, Jason Barnhart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred A. Myers and Mabel E. Barnhart.
At her request there will be no viewing. Graveside services will be held at Norland Cemetery, 2295 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 10 AM; where Pastor Reuban Coldsmith will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Chambersburg Area School District, for the Scotland Elementary School Library, c/o the Business Office, 435 Stanley Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
