Mary Lou Stewart, age 88, of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Amberson, PA; passed away in the Chambersburg Hospital on Friday, September 9, 2011. Born in Spring Run, she was the daughter of the late J. Wayne and Edith McCartney Gaston.

A US Navy nurse during WWII, Mary Lou went on to work as a registered nurse at the Chambersburg Hospital until her retirement in 1986. She was a graduate of the former Fannett Township High School and the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA with a degree in nursing. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg, PA. In addition Mary Lou was a life member of the James W. McCartney Post 232 American Legion, Dry Run, PA, a Charter Member of the Women in Military Service; and the Navy Nurse Corps Association, Oak Harbor, MI.

Surviving are her children, Connie S. Dean (husband Denny) of Amberson, PA and C. Douglas Stewart (companion, Sharon Mehaffey) of Taylorsville, NC; two grandchildren, Kyle Stewart (wife Amber) and Keith Stewart (wife Trish); three great grandchildren, Bryce, Ian, and Brayden; and one sister, Patricia Varner of Lynden, WA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clair W. Stewart “Stu” on October 23, 2002 and two sisters, Dorothy Wise and Gloria Goodheart.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 10 AM at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA; where Fr. Robert Poandl and Fr. Keith Carroll will celebrate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 from 7-9 PM at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA. Interment will be in Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church Cemtery. Military honors will be provided by members of the James W. McCartney Post 232 American Legion Color Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the above church’s cemetery fund, c/o Terry Ward, PO Box, Dry Run, PA 17220.
