Mary Tyrrell

September 14, 1916 — February 16, 2013

Mary Ruth (McGee) Tyrrell, age 96, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013 at ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg. Born September 14, 1916 in Durham, NC, she was a daughter of the late Roy S. and Annie (Hayden) McGhee. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Tyrrell (who died in 2004), a sister, Jennie Mann, and two brothers, Paul and Johnnie. Surviving are a brother, James Thomas; two sisters, Annie Mae Price and Mattie Mae Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to being an excellent seamstress and cook, Mary Ruth also loved to work in her flower gardens in her earlier years. While in school, she also enjoyed softball and basketball. She went on to graduate from business school and worked for A & P and Liggett-Myers in their accounting departments for a number of years.

She and John lived in several places in Pennsylvania and in South Carolina before finally settling down in Chambersburg, PA. After their retirement they also enjoyed traveling around the US in their camper for many years. A year after her husband’s death, Mary Ruth moved into the Luther Ridge Retirement Community where she lived for six years. Her last two years were spent with friends in Chambersburg. Mary grew up in the Southern Baptist church but has most recently been associated with the Chambersburg Gospel Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday February 18, 2013 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Friends will be received from 1:30 – 2:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Norland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, her desire was that memorial gifts be sent to Children’s Bible Ministries, and mailed to PO Box 188, Watauga, TN 37694. This is the parent organization of Camp Ta-Pa-Win-Go.
