Maxine Shields Garner, age 96, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2016, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born February 16, 1920, in Ft. Loudon, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late John and Gertrude Kahn Nelling.
Mrs. Garner was a 1939 graduate of the former Lemasters High School in Lemasters, Pa. Following high school, she was a seamstress at the former Stanley Company in Chambersburg and Uwanna-WashFrock in Ft. Loudon, while raising her family, and then became a teacher’s aide at St. Thomas Elementary School for a number of years before her retirement. She was a member of Antrim Brethren in Christ Church and was a devoted Sunday school teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school program and was a welcomed volunteer at the Chambersburg Hospital for 15 years. A love for the Lord, Mrs. Garner read the entire Bible on an annual basis completing 38 consecutive years of this inspiring devotion.
She is survived by three children, Sally George (husband Gary) of Chambersburg, PA, Karen Fuller (husband Terry) and Kenneth Shields (wife Audrey) both of St. Thomas, PA; six grandchildren, Debbie Murray (husband Dale), Ellen Strickland (husband Doug), Marianne Young (husband Jeff), Doug George, David Shields and Eric Shields; six great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth B. “Sam” Shields in 1964 and her second husband, Charles D. Garner, Sr. in 2000, along with three siblings, Thelma Miller, Pauline Rotz and Carl “Buddy” Nelling.
Funeral services will be held in her honor on Monday, October 31, 2016, at 11:00 AM at the Antrim Brethren in Christ Church, 24 Kauffman Rd. E, Chambersburg, PA 17202, where Pastor Ky Searcy will officiate. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 30, 2016, from 6 – 8 PM in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA and one-hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service in St. Thomas Cemetery.
