Melda Burkholder

September 30, 1926 — September 3, 2012

Melda S. Burkholder, age 85, of Chambersburg, PA passed away on Monday, September 3, 2012 at the Shook Home. Born in Chambersburg, PA on October 8, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Emma Lehman Shatzer.
A homemaker most of her life, Mrs. Burkholder enjoyed spending time with family, crocheting, solving cross word puzzles, and gardening. She was a life long member of King Street United Brethren Church and a member of the Golden Link Sunday School Class. At King Street, she volunteered in the nursery for over 50 years and helped with the church newsletter for over 30 years. In addition, she was a dedicated Philadelphia Phillies fan and Penn State fan.
Surviving are seven children, Donald L. (wife Mary) of Chambersburg, PA; Richard G. (wife Sherry) of Mifflintown, PA; James A. (wife Mary) of Chambersburg, PA; and Larry G. Burkholder (wife Dianne) of Shippensburg, PA; and Susan M. Kessinger (husband Michael) of Chambersburg, PA; Deborah I. Watson (husband Glenn) of Chambersburg, PA; and Norma J. Snider (husband Rodney) of Chambersburg, PA; fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and six siblings, Della Lockbaum of Fayetteville, NC, John Shatzer of Chambersburg, PA; Beda Stouffer of Chambersburg, PA ; Frank Shatzer of Chambersburg, PA; Blaine Shatzer of Middletown, MD and Lois June Fahnestock of Chambersburg, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn R. Burkholder on December 3, 2006 and an infant daughter, Marjorie Ann in 1960 and two sisters, Edna Condon and Treva Lawyer and one brother, Garnet L. Shatzer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Revs. Paul B. Baker, Lester F. Stine, and Clinton Bingaman will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her name to the Children’s Ministries Department at King Street United Brethren Church, 162 East King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
