Merle John Christman, 88, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Saturday evening, February 11, 2017 at the Shook Home. Born September 23, 1928 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Charles Basler and Ellen Holtry Christman. Merle was a 1945 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. A truck driver most of his life, he retired from the former Horn’s Motor Express in Chambersburg and then later drove for ATS Trucking and Roadway. He was a long-time active member of St. James United Brethren Church where he had served as a Trustee and Lay Leader. He was a member of Teamsters Local 992 in Hagerstown; was an avid reader; and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Merle was a dedicated family man and loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Lorraine Webber Christman, whom he married April 16, 1949; four children, Alan Christman of Grove City, PA, Mary McGowan (Robert) of Chambersburg, PA, Beth Griest of Chambersburg, PA, and Joel Christman (Donna) of Clarion, PA; five grandchildren, Shane Griest (Schen) of Cleveland, OH, Todd Griest (Sarah) of Shade Gap, PA, Jennifer Christman of Chambersburg, Scott Christman (Cherlyn) of Georgia, and Micah McGowan (Lindsay); nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary E. Christman and Mildred Wallech, both of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carrie Arrowood.
