Merle D. McCleary, 94, a resident of Quincy Village, passed away Wednesday evening, November 25, 2015 in the nursing home. Born December 19, 1920 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Robert D. and Sarah Morrison Piper McCleary. Mr. McCleary served with the US Army during WWII as a commander of a M18 tank destroyer. He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. His wife, Aioleen Miller McCleary, preceded him in death on August 10, 1999.
He is survived by two sons, Denton L. McCleary and wife Cheryl of Fayetteville and Daryl J. McCleary and wife Deanna of Douglasville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Dorothea Houck of Shippensburg, Pauline Frey and husband Richard of Shippensburg, and Kathryn Coleman and husband Harper of Tucson, Arizona; as well as two brothers, Charles McCleary of Huntsville, AL and Paul McCleary and wife Elaine of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 1, 2015 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from Noon-1:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
