Merle F. VanScyoc, 88, of Fayetteville, PA, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born on July 1, 1935 in Letterkenny Township, he was the son of the late Merle L. and Hazel M. (Keefer) VanScyoc. He was the widower of Carene Marie (Griesel) VanScyoc.
Van graduated from Elizabethtown (PA) High School, served his country with the U.S. Air Force and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting, before moving to California. His vast and storied career included positions with Bob’s Big Boy restaurants, Pacific Bell, the Forestry Department of California, as well as coffee and hobby shops. A true car enthusiast, he was affectionately known to his Penn National neighbors as “the Car Guy.”
He is survived by two children, Chet (Terrie) VanScyoc of Jackson, CA and Vickie (Mark Light) VanScyoc of Chico, CA; 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He will also be dearly missed by his companion, Sharon Mayer of Chambersburg.
Aside from his wife, Van was preceded in death by a son, Frederick K. VanScyoc, and an infant brother, Richard.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 18, in Pleasant Hall Cemetery, with Rev. Robert Macfarlane officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
