Michael D. Gottfried, 72, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2023, in Annapolis, MD with his daughter by his side. Born June 11, 1951 in Neenah, WI, he was a son of the late Daniel J. and Mildred C. Schmerein Gottfried. His beloved wife of 44 years, Candace R. “Candy” Burgner Gottfried preceded him in death on July 9, 2015.
Mike was a 1969 graduate of CASHS. After spending the first half of his career with Grove Worldwide, he retired as a Manufacturing Consultant with IBM, allowing him to have more time to do the things he truly loved. Traveling to Florida with Candy each year, Jimmy Buffett concerts, fishing at the shore, and of course “playing the ponies” were just a few of his favorites. He also enjoyed poker with friends, golf, listening to (loud) music and watching his Green Bay Packers with family. And you could always find him on the sidelines at one of his grandson’s games, sometimes even coaching.
He is survived by two children, Stephanie Pfund (Duane) of Annapolis, MD, and Travis Gottfried of Chambersburg; two grandsons, Jack and Jordan Pfund of Annapolis; four siblings, Victoria A. Reeve, John R. Gottfried (Stephanie), Paul R. Gottfried and Daniel D. Gottfried (Elsa); mother-in-law, Mary B. Engle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Aside from his wife and parents, Mike was preceded in death by three siblings, Chris A. Oyler, David A. and William D. Gottfried.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 9, 2023 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Fr. Matthew G. Smith will celebrate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
