Mildred C. Gottfried, age 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 2, 2023, with her daughter by her side. Born June 22, 1930 in Neenah, WI, she was one of three daughters of the late Milton and Eleanor Schmerein.
After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in Menasha, WI, she worked as a secretary for the American Can Company. Instead of taking a job opportunity in Texas, she married Daniel J. on September 2. 1950. Her real life of work began the following year with the birth of her first son in 1951. Her final child, of eight, was born in 1966.
Millie enjoyed many evenings with her book of the week. She usually moved through each of them rather quickly, if she thought it was good. She spent some years teaching adults how to read as a literacy volunteer at Coyle Free Library. She liked camping at the beach and enjoyed many family vacations in the pop-up camper with an add-a-room tent to fit all her kids. She enjoyed/endured long days on the boat with her husband and loved to brag about the days she out fished him. She played in the Lincoln Lanes bowling leagues and was a smooth shooter in the K of C shuffleboard league. “Lunch with the Girls”, was always a highlight of her month.
She treasured family gatherings at the house, where her smile would grow bigger every time another family member arrived. She had a way of connecting with each person before the end of the day. She carried this spirit on to Quincy Village Parker House where she enjoyed joking with, and being teased by, many of the caring nurses there.
She is survived by five children: Michael D. of Chambersburg, PA, Victoria A. of Newtown Square, PA, Crystal (wife of David) of Edenville, PA, John R. (Stephanie) and Paul R. of Chambersburg, PA and Daniel D. (Elsa) of Cortland, OH; eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Chris A. Oyler; her son, David A.; and grandson, Devon A.; her son, William D.; and two sisters, Barbara and Marlene.
A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, July 13 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA at 11 a.m., where the Rev. Fr. Matthew G. Smith will celebrate. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the Mass at the church.
Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to Quincy Village Benevolent Fund, 6596 Orphanage Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
