Mildred Mary McGowan Witter, 96, of Fayetteville, PA, passed peacefully in her home Sunday morning, January 8, 2017, while surrounded by her family. Born January 2, 1921 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Sherry S. and Anna Hepffer McGowan. She was a 1939 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School and served in the US Coast Guard during WWII. She retired from DESCOM at Letterkenny Army Depot. She was a member of Detrich-Brechbill Post 612 American Legion in St. Thomas, Hume-McNeil-Byers AMVETS Post 224, the Marine Corps League, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, B.P.O. Elks #600, NARFE Chapter 1063, and AARP, all in Chambersburg. Mid was an avid bowler for many years. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and overseas. She was well known in the area for her candy making and her baking. Mid loved her family and her family loved her. She will be greatly missed by all. Her beloved husband, Raymond L. Witter, whom she married November 4, 1946, preceded her in death on September 14, 1991.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Sleichter and husband David, and two sons, Raymond L. Witter, Jr. and Michael S. Witter and wife Deb, all of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Katherine Dymond of Fayetteville. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Alda Kratz and June Hall; and her brother, Jerry McGowan.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, January 12, 2017 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Kenny Brookens will officiate. Interment will be private.
