Miriam J. McCans, 88, a guest for the past 3 ½ years at the Orrstown Personal Care Home and formerly of 3925 Sycamore Grove Road, Chambersburg, PA died at 6:25 AM Friday, October 28, 2011 in Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 14, 1923 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late John and Alice Avinger Martin. Miriam was a 1942 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. A homemaker most of her life, she was employed in the Food Service Department at Scotland School for Veteran’s Children for fourteen years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Greenvillage, the Ladies Auxiliary of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, and Hume-McNeil-Byers AMVETS Post 224, all in Chambersburg. Miriam volunteered at Chambersburg Hospital and was an avid bingo player. She and her late husband, Art, loved camping and crabbing at Tom’s Cove in Chincoteague, VA. Her beloved husband, Arthur McCans, Jr. preceded her in death on November 5, 2000.
She is survived by three children, Dennis R. McCans and wife Jeanette of Chambersburg, Lou F. McCans and wife Judy of York, and Julie A. Lehman and husband Eugene of Chambersburg; four grandchildren, Wendy Schneider, David McCans, Brenton Lehman, and Christy Lautenslager; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian McCans; a brother, Richard Martin; a sister, Grace Lehman; two step-sisters, Ethel Martin and Elsie Slimmer; and five half-brothers, Blake, John, Glen “Shorty”, Arthur “Archie”, and William Martin; and three half-sisters, Zoe Johnson, Esther Green, and Martha Mills.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 1, 2011 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Richard Schoenly will officiate. Interment will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday and Noon-1:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
