Miyoko McAfee

July 15, 1948 — December 6, 2013

Miyoko McAfee was born on July 15, 1948, in Okinawa, Japan and passed away peacefully with her devoted husband Carl by her side on December 6, 2013, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Like the cherry blossoms she loved, Miyoko brought beauty and elegance to the world. And much like these delicate blooms, the season of her life was far too short. As a young lady, Miyoko was refined, intelligent and open to adventure. She met the love of her life on a golf course in Okinawa. For Carl, it was love at first site. After a year-long courtship they married, exchanging vows that were the first step in a journey that would carry them through 44 years of marriage and the birth of two children, Allan and Michele.

Over the years, Miyoko created homes for her family in North Carolina, Maine, Germany and Hawaii before settling in Chambersburg. She thrived in the life of an Army wife, adapting to each new culture. In Germany, she delighted in the daily shopping for food and quickly mastered the series of bus rides into town to buy groceries each day. She loved living in Hawaii and enjoyed the sunshine, sightseeing and taking her children to the beach. Miyoko was endlessly creative, with a passion for sewing, crocheting, gardening and cooking. Her home was filled with the softness of blankets she made as well as the fragrance of the food she cooked and the flowers she grew. Along with her love for Japanese culture, Miyoko enjoyed Country music and décor. She displayed the traditional artwork and ornately costumed dolls of her homeland alongside her treasured collections of Longaberger baskets and Amish dolls. Much like the peonies and sunflowers she nurtured, Miyoko McAfee was the essence of beauty, with soft layers surrounding a core of dignified strength. Her immense love for her family and her immeasurable bravery in facing illness never wavered. Even as her body grew weaker, her embrace remained strong. She was fearless, courageously facing surgery after surgery, treatment after treatment and enduring all with her quiet dignity, never complaining and always thinking of others.

Miyoko is survived by her beloved family, including her husband, Carl McAfee, her son, Allan McAfee, her daughter, Michele McAfee Tungett, her grandchildren Matthew Tungett, Amelia Tungett and Ava McAfee, her Son-in-Law, Mike Tungett, her Daughter-in-Law, Charissa McAfee and her siblings Emiko, Yukiko, Kiyoko, and Hajime Takeasu.

Services will be held at 8:00 PM Monday, December 9, 2013 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg PA. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, ME.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the East Central Division of the American Cancer Society at www.donate.cancer.org or to the Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850-5168.
