Nickolaos “Nick” T. Balafoutas, age 76, passed away on December 3, 2020, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born March 6, 1944 in Neohorion, Nafpactias, Greece, he was the oldest son of the late Theodore N. and Irene Mallios Balafoutas. His family immigrated to the U.S. in his early teen years.
Family, friends, and community were his focus. He was a restaurant entrepreneur and probably most remembered as “Nick” at the Cozy Inn Restaurant which was a fixture of downtown Chambersburg for decades. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He never forgot his Greek heritage and roots. After retirement, he and his wife travelled many times to his beloved hometown Greek village.
Surviving is his loving wife, Vassiliki ”Vickie” Karageorge Balafoutas, married on December 13, 1964; three children, Irene Sartalis (Andrew) of York, PA, Anastasia “Tessie” Zahos (John) of Carlisle, PA, and Theodore “Ted” Balafoutas of Chambersburg, PA; six grandchildren, Vicki Zahos (fiancée Panos), Billy Zahos, Christina Sartalis, Vasia Balafoutas, Nicole Sartalis, and Nicole Zahos.
He is also survived by four siblings, Vassiliki “Bessie” Katsaounis of Chambersburg, PA, Mary Panagos (George) of Chambersburg, PA, Magtha Angelis (Tom) of Greece, and John T. Balafoutas (Lambrini) of New Oxford, PA.
Public viewing for family and friends will be on Thursday, December 10, 2020, from 6 – 8 PM in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA. Due to current extraordinary circumstances, a private funeral service at Geisel Funeral Home will be held on Friday, December 11, 2020 followed by a private graveside service at Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA, which will be officiated by Fr. Michael Varvarelis.
