Nickolas W. “Nick” Johns, 82, of Spring Run, PA, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2015 at Chambersburg Hospital. Born on December 2, 1932 in Dunbar Township, Fayette County, PA he was the son of the late Upton R. and Mary E. Baker Johns. Nick was woodcarver by trade, but also loved to farm. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he honorably served his country in the Korean Conflict, earning a Commendation Medal from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Nick loved farming, working for the Fannett-Metal Fire Company at The Path Valley Picnic and events at the fire hall. He also enjoyed hunting, hunting mushrooms, ginseng, and picking berries. Ever a family man, more than anything else he enjoyed family get togethers. He was a member of Cumberland Valley Wood Carvers, being a charter member of the organization, as well as a lifetime member of Fannett-Metal Fire and Ambulance Company.
Nick is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rita M. Keefer Johns, whom he married on March 10, 1956; 2 daughters, Charlene McNemar and husband Mike of Martinsburg, WV and Carrie Boyer of Greencastle, PA; 2 sons, Leon and wife Pam of Fannettsburg, PA and Carl and wife Tracy of Spring Run, PA; a son in law, Gerald Shoop; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Shoop; a son in-law, Rod Boyer and; a sister Elizabeth “Belle” Flood.
A celebration of life to honor Nick will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Fannett-Metal Fire and Ambulance Company, 18778 Dry Run Road West, Dry Run, PA 17220. Pastor Lee Nunemaker will officiate. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are entrusted to Agett- Geisel Funeral Home, Dry Run.
