Orpha Bakner

July 18, 1933 — April 3, 2017

Orpha J. (Rock) Bakner, 83, of Pond Bank, PA, passed away Monday morning, April 3, 2017 at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born July 18, 1933 in Pond Bank, she was a daughter of the late Roy N. and Esther Bumbaugh Rock. A 1951 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Mrs. Bakner was a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of Pond Bank Independent Church.

She is survived by her husband, Mern H. “Buddy” Bakner, Jr., of Pond Bank, whom she married June 27, 1953; two daughters, Renee Sharpe (husband Jack) and Michelle Verdier (husband Jim), both of Chambersburg; a daughter-in-law Penny Bakner; four grandchildren, Jessica, Alex, and Meghan Sharpe, and Mary Bakner Yeager (husband Brandon); a step-granddaughter, Tia Verdier; and a sister, Miriam Beaver of Shippensburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Lonny M. Bakner on May 22, 2015; two sisters, Vivian Rock and Eunice Lorraine Rock; and two brothers, Marlin and Eber Rock.

Orpha shared a deep devotion to Jesus Christ. She served her church as Church Secretary for 35 years and as a member of Women’s Missionary Fellowship as well as being actively involved in Bible studies there, in her home, and at Pond Bank Mennonite Church. She also actively served the community of Pond Bank at the Community Center, helping to prepare meals for local celebrations.

She adored her family and devoted her life to caring for them. She shared a love of baking desserts, especially pies and sticky buns, making crafts of all kinds, painting, and collecting dolls. She will be forever remembered for her exceptional coconut cake.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, April 7, 2017 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Mervil R. Stambaugh will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
