Orvil L. “Leroy” Wenger, age 89, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Monday, September 15, 2014 at home surrounded by his family. Born August 31, 1925 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Paul and Mary Wenger Higgins.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Wenger served honorably for 38 years, retiring in 1979 as a CW4; he began his military service in the Navy during WWII, where he served for 6 years. He continued his service to his country as a civil service employee in conjunction with his Army service at Letterkenny Army Depot, where he retired in 1980 after 35 years of service as a Maintenance Supervisor for the Depot Equipment division. Mr. Wenger was a life member of the American Legion Post 46, the VFW post 1599, and the AMVETS post 224 all in Chambersburg. He was also a member of the 40 et 8 Club, Good Sams Club Camping, and the George Washington Lodge #143. He enjoyed fixing things and tinkering in his garage, bowling, camping, spending time with family, fishing, boating, and traveling, especially to Florida.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Betty Elizabeth Johnson Wenger, whom he married on May 3, 1951; seven children, Linda Stumbaugh (husband Roger) of Chambersburg, PA, Mary Lee Lappano (husband Vince) of Myrtle Beach, SC, James Wenger (companion Stacey) of Chambersburg, PA, Sandy Carbaugh of St. Thomas, PA, Jeff Wenger (wife Donna) of Ft. Loudon, PA, Deb Cline (husband Rodney) of Ft. Loudon, PA, and Randy Wenger (wife Tammie) of Fayetteville, PA; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters; and two siblings, Robert Higgins(wife Miriam) of Chambersburg, PA and Helen Shew of Chambersburg, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jamie Wenger.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 10 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Harold Yeager will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 18 from 7 -9 PM and one hour prior to the service on Friday in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Norland Cemetery, where members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW will conduct military honors.
