Owen Roberts

Owen Cortland Roberts, age 92, of Chambersburg, passed away on December 13, 2016 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born April 6, 1924 in Acosta, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late John Roberts and Vinnie Hess Roberts.

Owen was a U.S. Navy veteran, he served honorably from 1943-1946, and received the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. Afterwards, he was employed at the Bedford Gazette, Bedford, Pennsylvania. The rest of his career was with the Federal Government Printing Office in Washington, DC. After moving his family from Bedford to Washington, DC, they resided in Silver Spring, Maryland. He and his wife, Mary Jane, then retired to Spring Hill, Florida. They then moved back north settling in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
Dutch, as he was known to many, is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Jane Miller Roberts, whom he married on November 25, 1948; his daughters, Jacqueline Hunt (Robert Slahetka), Vienna, VA and Valerie Smith (Fred) Midlothian, TX; four grandchildren, Eric Hunt (Wendy), Aaron Hunt (Michelle), Scott Smith (Stephanie), Todd Smith (Mary); and 8 great grandchildren, Baylor and Madison Hunt, Lindsey and Paxton Hunt, Caden, Brady and Dylan Smith and Cole Smith. He was the one of eight children and his siblings have all predeceased him.

A military graveside service will be scheduled sometime in the future for his interment at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Military Honors will follow. Afterwards, family and friends will be invited to a Memorial Service in Vienna, VA. When scheduled, details will be provided on his web page on the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home website.
