Patricia H. Shands, 69, of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Manassas, VA, passed away Thursday morning, October 17, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Born October 14, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Edna Wells Herndon.
After graduation from Orange County High School in Orange, VA, she entered Madison College (James Madison University) graduating in 1966. In 1966, she began her teaching career in Culpeper, VA before moving to Manassas, VA, where she taught middle school social studies and English for 31 years. She retired from Stonewall Middle School in 1999. She was a compassionate lady who never in her life met a stranger and found great joy in helping others. A major part of her life included volunteering at the Chambersburg Hospital, New Life Thrift Store, and Cedar Street Mennonite Church. Her family will remember her as a loving wife, devoted mother, and friend to many.
She is survived by her loving husband and high school sweetheart, Allen L. Shands, whom she married February 5, 1965; two sons, Allen L. “Lee” Shands, Jr. and wife Dawn and their children Matthew and Emily Shands of Atkins, TX, and Eric M. Shands and wife Jolinda and their children Marin and Keaton Shands of Chambersburg, PA. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Carl Herndon.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 21, 2013 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor William Higgins will officiate. A private interment will be held in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
