Patricia Sollenberger

April 18, 1925 — January 1, 2019

Patricia H. Sollenberger, 93, passed away on January 1, 2019 at the Chambersburg Hospital. She was born April 18, 1925 in Woodland, PA, the daughter of Fred J. and Mary E. (Baker) Herbert. She was a 1948 graduate of Slippery Rock Teachers College. Prior to that, she also attended East Stroudsburg Teachers College. She was widow of Harry E. Sollenberger who died Jan 4, 2017. She was a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church. She was always very active in the lives of her four daughters, six grandchildren and her seven great grandchildren. Pat or “Mrs. S” to many, impacted young people in Franklin County over the years in a variety of capacities. She was a physical education and health teacher at Chambersburg High School and Central Junior High from 1948 to 1986 when she retired from teaching. She also was a teacher in Waynesboro, Washington Township School District. She led cheerleading and intramural sports throughout her teaching career. Growing up, she and her sister, Mary Margaret Guilles, loved Girl Scouts. Pat later became a Girl Scout Troop Leader and helped many young ladies navigate through their teen years to become wonderful Girl Scouts. She was a beloved swimming instructor with the American Red Cross for over 64 years. She taught at the Chambersburg Municipal Pool, Red Bridge and Dixie Motel Pool. In 2010 she was honored for her
dedication and service to the community though the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. She had many hobbies including swimming, sewing, knitting, quilting, golfing with her husband Harry including 3 hole-in-ones at Penn National, RVing with Harry to travel the country, following sports teams including Duke and pro teams, and reading the newspaper. Her daughters will attest that there was hardly any place that they could go with her that someone didn’t recognize her and speak to her.

Surviving is her brother John Herbert, her daughters, Cheryl Coldwell, Karen McGrady, Susan Havko (Fran) and Beth Levy (David); grandchildren, Brinn Skroban, Megan Kalb, Kellen Havko, Brian McGrady, Samuel Levy, and Scott Levy; great grandchildren, Kayleigh Timberger, Brooklyn Kalb, Hunter Kalb (deceased), Hudson Kalb, Everett Levy, Rosie Levy, and Whittaker Skroban; her nephews Mike Herbert, Steve Herbert, Robin Sollenberger Randy Sollenberger. She is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Margaret (Herbert) Guilles .
The family will receive friends at Trinity Episcopal Church Parish Hall behind the Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 S. Second Street, Chambersburg, PA on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Noon. In lieu of flowers, you may contribute to either the American Cancer Association or the Trinity Episcopal Church Community Breakfast Program.
