Quinn “Gene” E. Witherspoon, age 80, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at home on Saturday, September 29, 2018, after a year and a half battle with cancer. Born December 1, 1937, in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Quinn M. Witherspoon and Beatrice Pheil.
A 1955 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School, he went on to work for Suburban Propane as a gas serviceman for 35 years, retiring in 2002. He was a life member of the Moose Lodge 842 in Chambersburg and the South Mountain Fish and Game Club. He was a member of the Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, the Amvets Post 224, and the Marine Corps League, all in Chambersburg. Gene was also a member of the Friendly Coin Club, and the Insulators Club. He also loved going to yard sales, hunting, and fishing.
Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Harriet Poper Witherspoon, whom he married on June 29, 1958; his children, Robert Witherspoon (Diane), of Chambersburg, Linda Witherspoon (Kevin), of Chambersburg, Judy Hand (Troy), of Forest Grove, OR, and Barbara Strine (Danny), of Chambersburg; as well as 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a special cousin, Gerald Hamilton, of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Witherspoon.
Services and interment will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to the charity of one’s choice. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of SpiriTrust Lutheran Hospice for the care given to Gene and his family during this difficult time.
