R. Charles Poe, 85, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, January 6, 2016 at Penn Hall. Born July 4, 1930 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Roy C. and Ruth L. (Brechbill) Poe.
Charlie began his career at the Ford Company. In 1958 he started Charlie’s Used Cars and continued as the owner/operator for the next 52 years. Charlie was a member of Antrim Brethren In Christ Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball, and sponsored the Charlie’s Used Cars softball team.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Alice (Stinson) Poe, whom he married on April 25, 1952; four children, Eugene Poe (wife Bonny) of Chambersburg, Marie Potteiger (husband Jae) of Chambersburg, Jeffrey Poe (wife Marcia) of Shippensburg, and Sharon Gross (husband Ken) of Arizona; six grandchildren, David Poe (wife Heidi) of Ortanna, Jennifer Sollenberger (husband Michael) of Chambersburg, Chad Potteiger (wife Debbie) of Tennessee, Derek Poe (fiancé Elizabeth Behler) of Chicago, Illinios, Katie Clever (husband Tim) of Greencastle and Rick Gross of Oklahoma; seven great-grandchildren Davis, Ethan and Lauren Potteiger, Lilly and Gracie Poe, and Madylyn and Dallas Sollenberger; and four siblings, Theodore V. Poe of Chambersburg, Dorothy Lawyer of Chambersburg, Ruth Small of Chambersburg, and Isabell Wenger of Lancaster. In addition to his parents, Charlie is preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Donald, Arthur and William Poe; and three sisters, Mildred Starr, Evelyn Poe, and Eleze McKenzie.
A funeral service to honor Charlie’s life will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, January 11, 2016 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Ky Searcy and Chaplain Brenda Doyle will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Air Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
