Ralph H. “Jim” Johnston, Jr., 81, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 at Chambers Pointe Nursing Center. Born April 6, 1939 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Ralph H. Johnston, Sr. and Zoa E. Martin Johnston. Ralph was a graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. A professional firefighter, he was employed by the Borough of Chambersburg for 32 ½ years prior to his retirement. He was a member of King Street United Brethren Church; Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion; and the National Firefighters Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and softball. His wife, Helen L. Myers Johnston, preceded him in death on March 2, 2015.
He is survived by his son, Barrett Johnston of Chambersburg; and four sisters, Dolores St. Clair (Harold), Peggy Shearer, Bonita Byers (William), and Constance Abbott, all of Chambersburg. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, June Foreman, Edna Tarner, Zoa Rhea Johnston, and Patricia Spidel.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at King Street Church, 162 E. King Street, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Ron Cook will officiate. Masks will be required and social distancing measures will be in place. Interment will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to a local fire department or the charity of one’s choice.
