Ray L. Kaufman, 88, of Chambersburg, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2021. Born in Somerset County, he was the son of the late L. K. Kaufman and Wilma Bowman Kaufman, and the beloved husband of Lillian Hay Kaufman who preceded him in passing in January 2015.
A dedicated teacher of 36 years, Ray taught health and physical education and served as head basketball coach at Turkeyfoot Valley Area High School from 1955-1964. From 1964-1991, he taught driver education and then became a guidance counselor at Chambersburg Area Senior High School. He remained loyal to CASHS by serving as clock operator for football and basketball games for 40 years.
Central to Ray’s life was his Christian faith. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church where he sang in the senior choir and participated as teacher and church council member.
From 1956-1958, Ray’s U. S. Army military service was honorably performed in Asmara, Ethiopia with the Army Security Agency.
For 23 years, Ray acted as director for the Franklin County Teachers’ Credit Union filling roles as president and vice president. After retirement, he became a driver for Sunset Auto Sales for 15 years.
Ray is survived by his children, Susan K. Doll (wife of Gary S. Doll) of Lancaster; Jane E. Markmann (wife of Robert G. Markmann); three grandchildren, Ryan and Eric Doll and Alison Markmann and one brother, Fred Kaufman of Rockwood, PA. He was preceded in death by four brothers, William Kaufman, Donald Kaufman, Charles Kaufman, and Harold Kaufman and a sister, Doris Yoder.
A service of Christian Celebration and Remembrance for the Life of Ray will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 431 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA, on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 11:00 A.M with Pastor David Kiel officiating. A visitation for family and friends will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
