Raymond Barr

Raymond H. Barr, 78, of Chambersburg, PA, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, PA. He was born March 3, 1935 in Warfordsburg, PA. A US Navy veteran of both the Korean War and the Vietnam War he retired from military service on June 1, 1971 having received 28 Combat Medals. He was a US Navy UDT, EOD/NWD, and a member for nine years of the US Navy Seals. A member and Past Post Commander for two years of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 in Greencastle, he served as American Legion By-County Commander for one year and as a Deputy Commander in District 22 for three years. He was a life member of Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, and Hume-McNeil-Byers AMVETS Post 224, all in Chambersburg. He was an avid sports fan, and he enjoyed riding his trike, and was a member of Chapter C of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA).

Raymond is survived by his wife, Helen H. Barr, whom he married June 15, 1974; three children, Ramona, Cathy, and Raymond, Jr.; three step-children, Gloria, DuWayne, and Jody; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kay Ann. He was preceded in death by his step-father and his mother, James G. and Esther “Violet” Decker Brown; a daughter, Mary Beth; a brother, Mike, and a sister, Patsy.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Monday, December 9, 2013 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Paul B. Baker officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday and from 12:30-1:30 PM Monday at the funeral home.
