Raymond A. Fahnestock, 87, formerly of 111 Eisenhower Drive, Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Manor Care Nursing Facility of Chambersburg. Born March 18, 1925 in Chambersburg, PA, he was a son of the late Charles and Marie Snyder Fahnestock. A graduate of Chambersburg High School, Raymond was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and served onboard the USS Diphda AKA 59 (Attack Cargo Vessel) in the Pacific Ocean where he earned the following Ribbons: Pacific Theater Ribbon (3 Stars), American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon (1 Star). After receiving an Honorable Discharge, Raymond began a very successful Civil Service career at the Letterkenny Army Depot. He received numerous awards and special recognitions throughout his career. Raymond was selected to represent Letterkenny Army Depot for multiple consultation assignments including an extended assignment in Germany. At the time of his retirement in 1980, he had assumed overall supervisory responsibility for the Receiving Function at Letterkenny.
Subsequent to his retirement, he devoted much time toward two creative hobbies: Creating Stained Glass Art and performing gospel music as a vocalist, guitarist and founding member of the Mill Creek Trio Plus Three Band. He was married to the late Margaret (Stewart) Fahnestock on August 11, 1946. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2011. Margaret passed away on May 25, 2012. Both Raymond and Margaret were members of Mount Pleasant United Brethren Church.
A loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by three children; E. Carl Fahnestock and wife Lily of Chambersburg, PA, Patricia A. Gearhart and husband William of Mountville, PA, and Debra J.Brookens and husband William of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers; Kenneth and wife Delores Fahnestock and Robert and wife Dorothy Fahnestock, all of Chambersburg. He is also survived by two Sister-In-Laws; Helen G. (Stewart) Decker of Chambersburg and Thelma M. (Stewart) Johnson and her husband Harold of St. Thomas, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles R. Fahnestock.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Garry Culler will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7:00-9:00 PM and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
