Raymond Clifford “R.C.” Shoemaker, age 89, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at Menno Haven on Friday, August 18, 2017. Born in Upper Strasburg, PA on July 30, 1928, he was the son of the late Thaddeus “T.S.” Shoemaker and Beulah I. College Shoemaker.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, R.C. served honorably and was discharged for medical reasons. He was later employed by Letterkenny Army Depot as a Missile Electronics Technician Supervisor for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Mr. Shoemaker was an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Chambersburg. He was a longtime fan of football and was active as a P.I.A.A Football official for 17 years. Mr. Shoemaker was a board member of Patriot Federal Credit Union, and a former member of the Junior Fire Department of Chambersburg. He was a mechanic, farmer and dairy promoter. He also loved roller skating and supporting, organizing, and participating in the American Red Cross blood drives.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 58 years, Josephine Shoemaker, whom he married July 10, 1959; three children, Kevin T. Shoemaker (wife Karen) of Chambersburg, PA, and Kirby D. Shoemaker (wife Carol Ann) of Hustontown, PA, and Bruce R. Grant of St. Petersburg, FL, from his first marriage, ten grandchildren; six great-grandchild; and two siblings, Donald L. Shoemaker of York, PA and Bill Lockbaum of Mercersburg, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Kyle L. Shoemaker and Rex J. Grant; a brother, T. Eugene Shoemaker and a sister, Betty J. Herndon.
Funeral services will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday, August 24, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 50 Ragged Edge Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Bishop Michael Piercy will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:00 PM in the church. Interment will follow on Friday at 10:00 AM in Lincoln Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross, 25 Penncraft Ave. STE A, Chambersburg, PA 17202, or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
