Reverend Albert W. Gibson, Jr., 80, of Fayetteville, PA, died Monday morning, July 1, 2013 at the Gettysburg Lutheran Care Center. Born August 19, 1932 in Baltimore, MD, he was a son of the late Albert W., Sr. and Katherine Richwein Gibson. Rev. Gibson was a graduate of Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, both in Columbus, OH.
He was ordained in 1958 and served two congregations during his ministry; Christ Lutheran Church in Catonsville, MD and Hope Lutheran Church in Freehold, NJ, where he founded the church in 1966 and served until his retirement in 1997.
Pastor Gibson will be remembered for his service to the communities in which he lived and to the church at large; for promoting ecumenism, serving as Chairman of the Board of Regents of Capital University, Chairman of the Board of Centra State Medical Center in Freehold, NJ where he founded the chaplaincy program, and as recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Trinity Seminary.
Al was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles. He enjoyed golfing, cooking, crabbing, and traveling. A highlight of travel was an annual trip to Vero Beach, FL for a reunion of seminary classmates, known as “The Boys of Spring”.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lois Paul Gibson, whom he married June 13, 1954; his daughter, Martha G. Stebelton and husband David of Pickerington, OH; two sons, Thomas P. Gibson and wife Carolyn of Freehold, NJ and Steven A. Gibson and wife Andrea of Essex, CT; and six grandchildren, Alex, Hope, Melanie, Ella, Max, and Cal. He is also survived by four siblings, Regina Hayes and husband Jack, Russell Gibson and wife Susan, and Leanne Musick, all of Baltimore, MD, and Suzanne Ahalt and husband Randy of Ocean City, MD.
He was a loving and giving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM Saturday, July 13, 2013 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 2695 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Christopher Frye officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11:30 AM on Saturday at the church. Interment will be private.
