Rhoda B. Eckman

Rhoda B. Eckman, age 100, passed away on Thursday, February 6, at 9:10 a.m. at Brookview Personal Care, Menno Haven, Chambersburg, PA.

Born September 26, 1924 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Ruth (Hoover) Etter and Andrew H. Etter. A 1943 graduate of Chambersburg High School, Rhoda served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II during which time her husband Fred was serving with the U.S. Army.

She was a long-time, active member of King Street Church of Chambersburg, PA and the Buds of Promise Sunday School class.

She is survived by her daughter Judith Culbertson Shoop (Rodney); brother-in-law Donald Culbertson (Joyce); sisters-in-law Janet Culbertson and Peggy Bryner (John); step niece Linda Staley; step nephew Robert Eckman (Vickie); and many other nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, Rhoda was preceded in death by her first husband of 21 years, Fred B. Culbertson; second husband of 47 years, Robert E. Eckman; grandson Kevin R. Shoop; four brothers – Samuel, John, Emery, and Lester Etter; five sisters - Mary Danzberger, Margaret Warren, Laura Heckman, Dorothy Sleighter and Janet Etter; and many brothers- and sisters- in law. 

Rhoda always strived to maintain close family bonds and was known and loved for organizing and bringing her family together for picnics and holiday gatherings, many times in her own home. She was most comfortable when working in her kitchen, in her flower garden or in sharing conversation and a cup of coffee with a friend or family member. 

Services will be held 11:30 AM, Tuesday, February 11, 2025 in the Chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 with Rev. Ron Cook officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Tuesday morning in the funeral home. A committal service will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 13, 2025 in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, 3218 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201. 

In lieu of flowers, donations in Rhoda’s memory may be sent to the Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 2011 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201 or to the charity of your choice.
