Richard Bowers

September 12, 1946 — November 19, 2018

Richard R. “Dick” Bowers, Jr., age 72 of Shippensburg, PA, passed away at the Chambersburg Hospital on Monday, November 19, 2018. Born September 12, 1946, in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Richard R. and Mary Evelyn Furry Bowers.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, Dick served honorably during the Vietnam Conflict from 1965 – 1969. He went on to graduate from the former Shippensburg State College in 1972, with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He worked in accounting for a number of years, until he began a second career in computer programming for the Commonwealth of PA, where he worked until his retirement in 2004. Retirement proved to be too difficult for Dick, so he went back to work as a subcontractor for the state from 2005 until 2011. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1599 and a member of the American Legion Post 46, both in Chambersburg. He attended Life Point Church (formerly Brethren Fellowship Church) with his wife, Vivian. He enjoyed wooden crafts, getting together and playing games with friends, and maintaining his yard.
Surviving is his wife of 18 years, Vivian Smith Myers Bowers, whom he married August 12, 2000; four step-children, Jeffrey A. Myers (wife Crystal) of Greencastle, PA, Michelle Boock (husband Sean) of Chambersburg, PA, Steven Myers (wife Chris Anne) of Chambersburg, PA, and Greg Myers of Chambersburg, PA; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; three siblings, John Dewalt (wife Ruth) of Shippensburg, PA, Jeff Bowers (wife Gloria) of TN, and Mark Bowers of FL; three aunts, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his companion cat, Cinnamon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Janette Gayman.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at 11 AM at Life Point Church, 339 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17201, where Pastor Randy Rhodes will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the above church and address or to Hospice of Franklin County, 2257 McDowell Rd., St. Thomas, PA 17252.
