Richard Clayton Hamsher, 97, of Chambersburg passed away on June 28, 2017 at Menno Haven. Born November 18, 1919 in Chambersburg, he was the son of Clayton S. Hamsher and Elizabeth Martin Hamsher.
Mr. Hamsher graduated from Chambersburg High School in the Class of 1937 and Penn State University in the Class of 1947 with a BS in Agricultural Engineering. During WWII, he served four years in the European Theater of Operation as Infantry Captain. He worked 34 years for Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. After retirement, he & his wife were commercial citrus growers in Volusia County, FL. Richard enjoyed caning & rush chair seating, attending craft shows and making jellies and jams. He was a member of Penn Hall Christian Association, Franklin County Historical Society-Kittochtinny, 80th Infantry Division Veterans Association, Veteran of the Battle of the Bulge Association, American Legion, Civil War Round Table, Cumberland Craft Guild, Meals on Wheels, American Society of Agricultural Engineers, and Illuming Engineer Society. He also volunteered as a clerk at the Penn Hall Country Store.
He is survived by sons Garth W Hamsher, wife Terri and Eric C Hamsher, wife Sheryl, grandchildren Jonathan and Amy, and great grandchildren Connor and Parker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Joyce Colby Hamsher; and 3 siblings, Wilmer Hamsher, Robert Hamsher, and Pauline Hamsher Gabler.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM in the Penn hall Chapel, 1425 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday July 7, 2017 in Norland Cemetery. Chaplain Brenda Doyle will officiate. Military graveside honors will be provided by member of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Menno Haven Auxiliary, 2011 Scotland Ave., Chambersburg, PA.
