Richard Higgins

Richard E. “Dick” Higgins, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at his home. Born, July 20, 1935 in Mercersburg, he was a son of the late William E. and Mildred Hann Higgins.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Dick served honorably during the Korean conflict. He was the owner/operator of R & R Plumbing and Heating for over 30 years until he retired due to illness in 2012. He was a member of the Harry Lackhove Post 517 American Legion in Mercersburg, and a former member of the New Franklin Ruritan Club. He enjoyed his family and especially his grandchildren & great-granddaughter. He also enjoyed playing bingo, hunting, watching the Steelers, Eagles and Phillies and his morning rides to get the newspaper.

Dick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ada Miller Higgins, whom he married on August 14, 1958; three children, Mary E. Nicholson of Chambersburg, Richard E. Higgins, Jr. of Lewes, DE, and Timothy J. Higgins of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Ashley Higgins, and Kane Kelly of Chambersburg; one great-grandchild, Kacerra Shivers; and five siblings, Shirley Oller and husband Bill of Chambersburg, Robert W. Higgins and wife Judy of Fayetteville, Faye Woodal of Chambersburg, Monty Higgins of Chambersburg, and Donna Carbaugh of Chambersburg; numerous nieces; nephews and a special great nephew Michael Davis. Aside from his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Sue Higgins; and a brother, Leroy Higgins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 8, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Robert Mentzer will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens where military honors will be provided by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
