Robert A. Akers, age 80, of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Charlottesville, VA; passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2011 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 26, 1930, he was the son of the late David C. and Marjorie Eilenberger Akers.
A graduate of Drew University in 1953; Robert went on to pursue a career as a computer systems analyst; working for various corporations until his retirement in 1987; where he and his wife retired to Charlottesville, VA. Robert enjoyed solving puzzles, playing golf, and reading in his spare time.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Joan Dougherty Akers, whom he married on August 16, 1952; two children, Scott Douglas Akers and Lauren Akers Bertollo (husband Sean) of Wayne, NJ; 2 grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor Akers of Southbury, CT; and sister-in-law, Peg Germond (husband Robert) of Mechanicsburg, PA.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 2 PM in the Penn Hall Chapel, 1425 Philadelphia Ave. Chambersburg, PA; where Chaplain Robert Keener will officiate. The family will receive friends one-half hour prior to the service. Interment will be private. If desired the family suggests memorial contributions in his name to the Salvation Army, 159 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
