Robert C. “Zip Code” Cordell, age 67, of Greencastle, PA passed away on Saturday morning, February 8, 2014 at his home with his family by his side. Born July 13, 1946 in Chambersburg, PA, he was a son of the late Gerald C. and Ena Mae Campbell Cordell.
A U.S. Navy veteran from 1964 - 1969, Bobby served his country honorably during the Vietnam Conflict. He then went on to pursue a career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1984, after 15 years of service. Upon retirement he went in to business for himself as a tavern owner, starting with Bilco’s in Waynesboro, PA and later the Mouse Trap in Chambersburg and most recently in the landscaping business. He was a life member of the American Legion, Post 46, VFW Post 1599, and the AMVETS Post 224 all in Chambersburg, PA. He was also a social member of the Marine Corps, Moose Lodge 842, and Treasurer of LST1148 Reunion Committee. He enjoyed traveling, camping, watching football, local history, train rides, cooking, and time spent with his family.
Surviving is his fiancé, Carolyn Schmuck; three children, Robert D. Cordell (wife Michelle) of Waynesboro, PA, Ginger R. Bricker (husband Bill) of Chambersburg, PA, and Heather M. Houser (husband Steve) of Chambersburg, PA; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gerald R. Cordell of Chambersburg, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Miller Cordell.
A graveside service with Military Honors provided by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will be held at Parklawns Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 12:00 PM. Pastor Victor Miller will officiate. Following the graveside service, the family invites friends to join them at 2:00 PM at the VFW Post 1599, 747 S. 4th St., Chambersburg, PA for a memorial service. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his name to a veteran’s organization of your choice.
