Robert Cromie

August 9, 1935 — September 17, 2015

Robert “Bob” J. Cromie, 80, of Chambersburg, PA, died Thursday, September 17, 2015, at the Chambersburg Hospital following a 14-year long struggle with leukemia. Born on August 9, 1935, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late James P. Cromie and Helen Ransil Cromie
Bob attended St. Josephs’ College in Rensselaer, Indiana and received a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University as well as a Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Bob served in the U.S. Army. After teaching school for seven years, Bob worked for the Department of Defense at DCAS for 28 years in Cameron Station, VA. Bob was a daily Mass server and reader at Corpus Christi Catholic Church as well as a cantor. He was also a docent at the Franklin County Historical Society and a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. Bob had a passion for music, something that served him well for the 18 years he spent as the Sanctuary Choir Director at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Lake Ridge, VA. He loved reading and had special interest in the Civil War, Second World War, and classical music. Bob was a lifetime fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins.
Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Patricia (Orris) Cromie, whom he married June 24, 1965; his son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Shelley Cromie, and grandchildren (Tyler, Kylee, and Kelsey); his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and John McQuilkin and grandchildren (James and Kayla); two brothers, and four sisters.
The Cromie family would like to give special thanks to all the people who have prayed for Bob during his long illness. Special appreciation is given to the excellent, caring staff at the Grove Cancer Center Oncology Department and SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care as well as the doctors and nurses at Chambersburg Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at 1pm at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave, Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Fr. Dominic M. DiBiccaro will celebrate. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 21, 2015, from 6 – 8 PM with a Vigil Service beginning at 7:30pm at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA. Interment will follow the Mass on Tuesday in Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or memorial contributions, and at the families’ request, please offer a prayer for those who may be sick or dying.
