Robert E. Garnes, age 91, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at his home on Monday, September 19, 2016. Born March 16, 1925, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Samuel C. and Ada Jewel McNair Garnes.
A graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Mr. Garnes went on to serve during WWII in the U.S. Army – Air Corps. He was later employed at Letterkenny Army Depot for 32 years, retiring in 1978, as an Equipment Specialist. Mr. Garnes was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Chambersburg, the Cumberland Valley Woodcarvers Club, N.A.R.F.E., the Experimental Aircraft Association, and A.A.R.P. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodcarving, trains, and planes.
Surviving are three children, Samuel L. Garnes (wife Glennis) of Chambersburg, Larry E. Garnes (wife Michele) of College Park, MD, and Robin D. Garnes of Chambersburg, PA; four siblings, Joan Harvey of Doylesburg, PA, Vivian Shetter of Chambersburg, Marion Campbell of Chambersburg, and Doris Sollenberger of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in is his beloved wife, Margaret Ballinger Garnes, in 2007, whom he married September 22, 1945; and by a half-brother, William Higgins.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA on Friday, September 23, 2016, at 10 AM; where Rev. Jerry Roth will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Spiritrust Lutheran Hospice, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
