Robert D. Leisher, age 83, formerly of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Friday afternoon, May 2, 2014. Born April 21, 1931 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Robert and Hazel Leisher. His beloved wife of 47 years, Linda Blankenship Leisher, whom he married on September 10, 1954, preceded him in death in 2001.
Robert was a 1949 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School where he played on the basketball team. A U.S. Navy veteran, Robert served honorably from 1949 until 1953 during the Korean Conflict. Following his service in the Navy, Robert attended the University of Hawaii and then the Pennsylvania State University from which he graduated in 1957. Robert played basketball at both universities and served as team captain during his senior year at Penn State. He worked as the Director of Recreation for the City of Summit, NJ until his retirement in 1991 after 34 years of service. Robert was a past president of the NJ Recreation and Parks Association. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #600 in Chambersburg, the Penn State Varsity ‘S’ Club, the Penn State Alumni Association, and the South Central Chapter Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Robert is survived by five children, Colin Leisher and wife Kathy of Bel Air, MD, Dirk Leisher and wife Robin of Fogelsville, PA, T. Scott Leisher and wife Judy of Wilmette, IL, Timothy Leisher and wife Gina of West Long Branch, NJ, and Patricia Dalzell and husband John of King of Prussia, PA; sixteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Arnold and Eber Leisher; one sister, OcieLee McClure; and numerous nieces and nephews. Aside from his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his grandson, Bobby Leisher; five brothers, Marvin, George, Merle, Harry and Elden Leisher; and two sisters, Starr Suders and Hazel Addlesberger.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Terri Zastovnik will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM on Saturday at the funeral home.
